Week 5!

In class

This week started by presenting our project inspirations. I had three different inspirations from different disciplines; I found these inspirations helpful for my project. I was able to see what's out there regarding my project and what's already been done. The three inspirations are a VR about the war in Syria; Liyla and the Shadows of War a story about a little girl lives a war zone; Artificial Killing Machine – Visualizing U.S. military drone strikes that visualize the deaths of each individual (you can see the presentation slides on the right side).

The differences between Art and Design were really impressive. In summer, I took an art class and the professor of that class ask the same question "what's the difference between art and design?" I really didn't know the differences, I thought design is also considered an art but after taking that class art is different and what the artist creates are different from the designers. Having this discussion reminds me of that class as we have the same answers.

The rest of the week was a studio and reading discussion.

Readings

This week I got to read two papers "Humanities Approaches to Graphical Display" and "the short guide to material speculation". The first reading was somehow confusing, it discusses the importance of representing data produced by humanists and that all data are capta. Also, the reading had another view about "subjective".This part was confusing for me as my own understanding of this word is based on feelings or opinions rather than facts. However, the reading made me think about the relationship between the viewer and the object and how it can be subjective.

The reading got clearer after the group-activity we had. All of my group members had the same struggle as I had about the reading and they were confused. But In class we were trying to help each other with this reading, once the professor started answering the questions it was easier at the same time fascinating. Thinking about data and how we can interpret the findings, made me rethink about the data I usually  see!

Reading this is beneficial regarding the research I am doing in this class also in my future classes.

Project work

To start working on my project, I have created a use case diagram and a storyboard that shows some of my thoughts about the project!
