Semi-Structured Interviews

After the cultural probes we created last week, we gave our users the kits and we are still waiting to get them back, we are excited to  see their response and their experience with the kits. Moving forward with our user group, this was all about interviews .The week started with the readings “Interviews” and “Semi-Structured Interviews”. It shows the kind of interviews we could do such as Semistructured interview,  structured interview, and unstructured interview. This reading prepared us for the interviews sessions we are planning to do  with our user group. The reading shows how could we form an interview , gather the information from the users and what helpful information could  we gather. In addition, it shows the style of the interview and what elements would helps us during our interview sessions. The second reading we had is “Cultural Probes and the Value of Uncertainty” ; it describes the difficulty the designers have when they get back the Cultural Probes kits and how to analyse the results of the Cultural Probes. This reading will help us when we get our Cultural Probes kits from our user. It will help us form the results and responses.

After having these readings, we started thinking of the typical questions we are going to ask In our interview session we are planning to have a Semi-Structured Interviews. On class, we had an activity that helps us to form some of the questions we are planning to have in our interview. In my group, we brainstormed some of the questions. We also thought about whether the answers will help us know more about our user group or not. And what help question we could ask.

On Thursday and Friday, we draw together our interview protocol and questions. We wrote our protocol which is basically an overview of our interview sessions. In addition, we wrote down the interview question; the interview will start with “INTRODUCTION” (introducing our self) then warm-up questions about the Cultural Probes kits. After that, we will have “DOMAIN QUESTIONS” which is specific questions about our users. Finally, we created a “CONSENT FORM” that the user just has to sign to get their permission to record their voice. Also in during this, we presented our Semistructured interview to class and we have a lot of good feedback from our peers and professor. We added some of the questions and edited some according to the feedback we got from our professor and peers; we knew how a question should be asked.

We are planning to get our kits soon and after that. We are going to analyse the responses. Then we are planning to have the interviews. We already created a doodle calendar for the interviews sessions. I hope we could form the interviews as we planned. I have learned during this week many good things that I didn’t know . I learned to think about the questions before asking and what question will help in our design. I got to know why interviewers ask some of the questions such as the open-ended questions that will lead to the other question .  Personally, It’s the first time to interview someone, I have been interviewed but not an interviewer! Well, I feel it’s easier than being interviewed in addition  the structure of our interview is Semistructured interview which is not too formal.

This is a picture of our protocol and Semi-Structured Interviews we created.
